The last semifinals of the CrossFit® Games take place this week, from May 31 to June 2 : Syndicate Crown, the second North American semifinal, Copa Sur, the South American semifinal, and the Renegade Games, the African semifinal of the CrossFit® Games, which takes place in South Africa.
The Renegade Games take place in Vanderbijlpark, not far from Johannesburg. 40 men and 40 women will compete over two days for the only two tickets available for the CrossFit® Games. The competition promises to be fierce.

Hustle Up: What impact has CrossFit had in South Africa? Chad Theron: CrossFit® has significantly influenced South Africa by popularizing high-intensity interval training and functional fitness, fostering strong community bonds within gyms, and promoting overall health and wellness.
It has also produced competitive athletes, spurred economic growth through new gyms and related businesses, and increased the demand for certified fitness trainers. Overall, CrossFit® has transformed the fitness culture in South Africa, promoting healthier lifestyles and community engagement.
Isn't it difficult to develop CrossFit® in a country where inequality and unemployment are high? Developing CrossFit® in a country with high inequality and unemployment is challenging due to affordability issues, limited resource allocation, restricted access in economically disadvantaged areas, cultural barriers, and financial instability caused by job insecurity.
However, some initiatives aim to make CrossFit® more accessible through scholarships, community programs, and sliding scale fees, leveraging its community-oriented nature to provide support.
Are South Africans receptive to the benefits of CrossFit® ? Yes, many South Africans are receptive to the benefits of CrossFit. The appeal of high-intensity, varied workouts, combined with a strong sense of community and support, attracts a diverse range of participants. CrossFit’s emphasis on functional fitness and overall health aligns well with the growing health and wellness trends in the country.
Competitive CrossFit® athletes and local competitions have also helped raise awareness and interest in the sport. Despite economic challenges, the enthusiasm for CrossFit® continues to grow, supported by inclusive initiatives and community-focused programs.
How do you see the future of CrossFit® in South Africa? The future of CrossFit® in South Africa looks promising, with expected growth in participation due to increasing health awareness and the appeal of its community-oriented, scalable workouts. Efforts to improve affordability and accessibility, along with rising competitive interest and strong community support, will likely enhance inclusivity and promote healthier lifestyles across diverse populations.
