What Drives Retention in Functional Gyms

Hustle Up·19 novembre 2025

This Monday’s webinar revealed real strategies to grow, retain and lead a thriving fitness community in 2026 and beyond.

This Monday, November 17th, Hustle Up and CrossFit Affiliates hosted a live webinar focused on one of the biggest challenges facing gym owners today: how to increase retention while growing a sustainable and connected community.

The session featured special guest Javier Campo, CEO of CrossFit Wezone, who shared the systems and values that have helped his team grow from one single box in Madrid to a network of 10 gyms with more than 4,000 active members.

The discussion started with a clear takeaway: retention begins with your coaches. Investing in staff development, creating clear growth paths, evaluating consistently, and supporting them as human beings has proven to directly impact member loyalty. Wezone’s system includes annual evaluations, a structured coach tier system, in-house training tools, and benefits like private health insurance. While not every gym needs to go that far, the philosophy is simple, if you take care of your team, your team takes care of your athletes.

Community-building also took center stage. From competitions to Christmas dinners, the power of shared experiences was clear. Media content plays a key role here, when athletes see themselves in your story, they feel like they belong.

From there, the webinar explored operational strategies: how to track early-stage members, how to respond to drop-offs, and how to use campaigns without damaging long-term brand value. Regular surveys and feedback loops are part of Wezone’s DNA, with data flowing both ways, between leadership, coaches, and members.

The session closed with a reflection on how the right technology can help make retention more predictable. Tools that simplify communication, centralize feedback, and support daily operations allow gym owners to better understand their community, and act on it consistently. Platforms like Hustle Up are evolving to support that shift, offering solutions designed with the real needs of gym communities in mind.
