Roman Khrennikov shows us the way to never give up

Hustle Up·14 mai 2024

Injured his left foot at the CrossFit® Games 2023, the CrossFit® Mayhem athlete bravely finished the competition.

It was undoubtedly the most powerful moment of the CrossFit® Games 2023. It was a pure moment of emotion that overwhelmed the spectators at Madison's Alliant Energy Center. Everyone was on their feet, shouting and giving a standing ovation to Roman Khrennikov, who will remain the great man of this edition of the Games. His courage and self-sacrifice set an example for the entire sporting community.

Victory was almost certain for Khrennikov until event 10 "Muscle-up logs", during which he injured his left foot. No one could have imagined him going through with the competition, weakened and unable to stand on his left leg.

However, Roman Khrennikov was on the floor to take part in event 11 "Parallel-bar Pull". "I want to be a hero to my son and let him see me fight to the end", said the CrossFit® Mayhem resident after the competition.

It was when Roman Khrennikov grabbed the jump rope to perform the event's double unders that the audience realized what was happening on the floor. Khrennikov performed singles and double unders on one single leg. You could see the pain on his face. Determination too. The tension was rising steadily in the Alliant Energy Center. The audience literally went into a trance. They chanted "Roman" and "Roman" in support of the suffering athlete, who hung on to finish the event in an atmosphere that's hard to describe.

This moment will undoubtedly go down in the history of the CrossFit® Games. With this injury, Roman Khrennikov missed out on victory. He finished in third place behind Canadians Jeffrey Adler and Patrick Vellner. But perhaps that wasn't the most important thing, as the values conveyed by Roman Khrennikov that day went beyond performance and competition. They are inspiring for Crossfitters of all ages and levels. Never give up and surpass yourself despite the difficulties. "He embodies the spirit of generosity and courage that characterize our community, that unite us and make us better," said Nicole Carroll, CrossFit® Chief Brand Officer, who presented him with the Spirit of the Game award.
